Road Trip - Day 2

Through Ohio and Indiana to Chicago

My cousin Jade from Rio is spending a year in Chicago with her husband who is doing a Masters in Law, so we arranged at the last minute to stop by and visit with them. So, Chicago was the destination for our second day on the road.

From Ohio where we spent the night we set off; the weather was not as nice today -- it rained most of the way. Fernanda again did the heavy lifting, while I played navigator and radio operator. One audio book down already -- though it was a short one, only 6 disks.

Mostly highway driving until Indiana where we deviated off the highway around South Bend to drive through Indiana Amish Country and have lunch. Looked very similar to Pennsylvania Amish country -- all this driving, and it feels like we haven't come far at all!

Crossed into Central Time zone (Indiana seems to do Daylight Savings now -- boo!), and picked up Chicago traffic. Rain, stop-and-go traffic, and northern New Jersey Turnpike ambiance -- yuck! Fernanda did push the mileage estimate the car gives to 30.5 mpg today though -- woo-hoo!

Twenty minutes trying to find a parking space in vain -- Chicago parking sucks! Met up with my cousin and her husband Miguel, whom I had not yet met, in their 29th floor apartment. While Miguel stayed in to finish some studying, we went out with Jade to see some Chicago. They live right by North Avenue Beach (too bad it was raining). We went and hung out a while at Navy Pier and the Crystal Gardens, then walked down to Millennium Park to meet Miguel under the Bean (a huge shiny stainless steel sculpture shaped like a bean), and then went to Portillos for ribs.

We like Chicago.
